HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER

SO, YOU WANT TO JOIN THE ELKS?

To be eligible for membership into our Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.), you must be a citizen of the United States over the age of 21 who believes in God.

You must be sponsored by a member “in good standing” (i.e., a member’s dues are paid up-to-date) of our Lodge and reside in the jurisdiction of our Lodge.  The Sponsor (member) can obtain an Application for you from the Lodge Office or the Lounge (Club).

After the Sponsor fills in the top portion and a portion on back of the Application, you will fill in the rest (follow the instructions and answer all questions, sign and date it).  You can return the completed Application to the Lodge Office yourself (or in the Lounge) with anApplication fee of $100 – cash, check, or money order only (a one-time non-refundable fee, unless you are rejected for membership or your sponsor withdraws your Application – see “à” below).

At this point, you will be considered a “Candidate/Member in Process”, which allows you to enjoy the Lodge and the Lounge, but you can not attend our Lodge meetings, sponsor anyone for membership, or rent our rooms until you have been initiated.

Our Lodge meeting dates are the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays in each month.  It takes approximately 6-8 weeks to be initiated into our Lodge.  Our membership dues are $160 per fiscal year (April 1 of present year to March 31 of following year).

The following meetings will apply towards you becoming a member of our Lodge.

INVESTIGATION MEETING

After your Application has been turned in, it will be read out at the next scheduled Lodge meeting.  It will then be forwarded to the Investigation Committee.  You and your Sponsor will receive a notice by mail to attend this meeting, along with the date and time.  This meeting usually lasts 30-45 minutes.  Your spouse, if applicable, is welcome to attend.

After the Investigation meeting, the Committee will report to the Lodge concerning your membership (favorable or unfavorable).  At the next Lodge meeting, your Application (if favorable) will be read out.  Then at the next Lodge meeting, your Application will be voted on.

 INDOCTRINATION MEETING

When the vote is concluded, you and your Sponsor will be notified by mail to attend this meeting, along with the date and time.  During Indoctrination, you will learn more about the Order's programs and charities.  This meeting takes about 1 hour and your spouse, if applicable, is encouraged to attend.

INITIATIOMEETING

The notice you received for the Indoctrination meeting will also include the final stage – the Initiation meeting (date and time also specified).  The amount of your membership dues, payable at this meeting, are stated on this notice.  This meeting takes about 2 hours.  Spouses are not allowed at this meeting.

The Candidate must, within 4 months from the date of his/her election, appear for Initiation or be subject to forfeiture of the Application fee and Application withdrawn.  However, if the Candidate does not attend theInvestigation and Indoctrinationmeetings in a timely manner, this could also cause forfeiture of the Application fee and Application withdrawn.

If for any reason your Application is rejected, you cannot reapply for membership until months from the date of rejection.
